LPL Announces 'Immediate Termination' Of Dambulla Thunders After Owner Got Arrested

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) has terminated the Dambulla Thunders' contract just a day after the LPL auction. 

The decision follows the arrest of Tamim Rahman, CEO of Imperial Sports Group and a British national of Bangladeshi origin. 

Tamim Rahman was arrested by Colombo Police on allegations of match-fixing before boarding a flight in Colombo.

Dambulla Thunders in trouble!

The LPL player auction, held yesterday, was a huge success. However, the league is determined to maintain its integrity by not associating with corrupt owners.

The Dambulla franchise, one of the two new teams alongside Galle Marvels. Previously, the franchise was known as Dambulla Aura, Dambulla Viiking, and Dambulla Giants.

Thunders had signed top players such as Mustafizur Rahman, Dilshan Madushanka, Nuwan Thushara, Akila Dananjaya, Danushka Gunathilaka, Nuwan Pradeep, Ibrahim Zadran, Hazratullah Zazai, Karim Janat, and Iftikhar Ahmed.

The LPL has assured that the futures of the signed players are not affected. The league will either manage the Dambulla Thunders team themselves or find new ownership for the team.

"The LPL will go ahead as scheduled, we will run the side if we can't find an owner in time for the LPL. In the past, we managed two sides and we are ready to take a financial hit," -an LPL official spoke.

The Lanka Premier League (LPL) is set to start from July 1 to July 21. Competing teams include B-Love Kandy, Colombo Strikers, Galle Marvels, and Jaffna Kings. 

Since its inception in 2020, the LPL has completed four successful editions. Wanindu Hasaranga led B-Love Kandy are the current champions of LPL.
