The Lanka Premier League is back. The fifth edition of the tournament will start on July 1. A total of 24 matches will be played between the five teams. The final will be played on July 21. Sri Lanka Cricket announced a media release on Friday, February 16. The league has gained a lot of popularity over the years.

Jaffna Kings have been the most successful team in the league so far, winning three titles. Ace Sri Lanka all-rounder Angelo Mathews led B-Love Kandy to lift the trophy last season, defeating Dambulla Aura by five wickets. Skipper Matthews became man of the match due to his all-round brilliance in the final.

Mathews scored 25 runs off 21 balls and bowled with an economy rate of 5.5. B-Love Kandy Wanindu Hasaranga was named the player of the tournament. He had a dream season, scoring the most runs and picking up the most wickets. The leg spinner will be the player to watch out for in the forthcoming season, too.

The first edition of the tournament was planned to be held in 2018, but due to political and administrative reasons, it was postponed till 2020. The Jaffna Kings who were formerly known as Jaffna Stallions have been the dominating force in the league. They won the first three seasons of the tournament back to back.
