According to multiple reports, former India batter Gautam Gambhir is a top contender to replace Rahul Dravid as head coach, with Dravid set to leave the position after the T20 World Cup.

Various names have been discussed for Dravid's replacement, starting with VVS Laxman, head of the National Cricket Academy, who has reportedly declined the job.

Several foreign coaches are also in consideration, including Stephen Fleming, who led CSK to five titles, Justin Langer of LSG, and former MI coach Mahela Jayawardene.

Gautam Gambhir is the latest and most prominent name rumored for the role, right now. Currently mentoring KKR, Gambhir led the team to the finals of IPL 2024.

As of now, Gambhir appears to be the BCCI's priority. According to a report in the Times of India, the BCCI is likely to speak with Gambhir in the coming days.

Interesting details come up regarding Gambhir's coaching ambitions

When Gambhir's name is brought up, senior player Virat Kohli's name often comes into the discussion due to their past controversies.

Gambhir and Kohli had clashed previously when they were captains of KKR and RCB, respectively, and again when Gambhir was the mentor for LSG.

However, this season, both players ended their rift and hugged after the RCB-KKR match. The BCCI believes the rift has ended and that they now have a good relationship.

"It is learnt that Gambhir and senior players in the Indian team have been getting along quite well of late. If people are talking about Gambhir's friction with Virat Kohli, it can be confirmed that the two have always got along well off the field. Even after the bust-up during an IPL match last year, the two were made to sit down and sort out any issue if they indeed had one," the report added.

We will have to wait and see if Gambhir takes up the Indian coaching job. Rumors also suggest that Ashish Nehra's name is being considered for the position.
