Mumbai Indians zealot Lasith Malinga will be making his return to the franchise for next year’s Indian Premier League (IPL) season. Having previously served the franchise as a player, the Sri Lankan speedster will now ply his trade for them as the fast bowling coach, replacing outbound Shane Bond.

Back in early 2021, Malinga announced his retirement from T20 cricket and was appointed as Rajasthan Royals’ fast bowling coach the following year. He spent two seasons at the franchise, while Bond has been helming the same role for Mumbai Indians since 2015.

MI legend Malinga returns as bowling coach

Malinga made his IPL debut through Mumbai Indians back in 2008. The cricketer spent the entirety of his IPL playing journey at the franchise, before his retirement prompted Rajasthan Royals to rope him in as their fast-bowling coach.

The legendary speedster seems to have found his way back at the Mumbai Indians camp, albeit in his newfound coaching role. Malinga is set to replace former pacer Shane Bond following the New Zealander’s near decade-long stint.

The Sri Lankan legend won four IPL titles for the Mumbai Indians, all under Rohit Sharma’s leadership between 2013 and 2019. He also starred in the team’s 2011 Champions League T20 title win.

Overall, Malinga snared 170 wickets across all his 122 IPL appearances, and is currently the joint-sixth highest wicket-taker in the history of the tournament. However, he is second only to Dwayne Bravo among fast bowlers, and the most successful bowler in IPL history for a single franchise.
