Jasprit Bumrah celebrated his return to competitive cricket by leading Team India to an emphatic win over Ireland in the first T20I of their three-match series. Apart from donning the leadership hat, the speedster also helmed the new-ball attack by claiming two wickets within the opening over of the game.

Bumrah was fittingly adjudged as ‘Player of the Match’ for his efforts, after the ‘Men in Blue’ went 1-0 up in the series with a win in the rain-curtailed contest.

Notably, the speedster almost slumped to another injury in the field on his long-awaited return, as he avoided a nasty collision with teammate Ravi Bishnoi at the boundary.

Bumrah and Bishnoi laugh off injury scare

During the 14th over of the Irish innings, Jasprit Bumrah nearly tripped over teammate Ravi Bishnoi when the two attempted to save a boundary. The incident occurred when hosts batter Curtis Campher guided the ball towards short fine leg region.

Bishnoi, who was running from backward square leg, made a diving effort to stop the ball while his skipper Bumrah chased it towards the ropes from a different direction. Just as they were about to collide, the speedster made a last-second leap over the spinner to avoid any injury.

While both failed to prevent the boundary, the two cricketers saw the funny side of the incident and laughed off their injury scare.

Interestingly, both bowlers delivered identical spells against Ireland. The two claimed two wickets each in the innings while bowling out their quota of four overs. While the pace veteran conceded 24 runs in his spell, the young spinner conceded 23 from his end.

Bumrah will now lead Team India in the second T20I against Ireland on August 20. The match will be played out at the Malahide Cricket Club Ground in Dublin.

The ongoing series serves as a testing ground for the comeback man, in his bid to make a full return to the Indian team for the upcoming 2023 Asia Cup and World Cup.
