Tilak Varma Congratulates IPL Teammate Dewald Brewis Upon National Call-Up

Dewald Brewis earned his long-awaited national call-up for South Africa's upcoming home series against Australia. The cricketer was selected in South Africa's T20I and ODI squads for the series, which serves as the team's final set of fixtures before the ODI World Cup in India later this year.

Notably, Brewis got his national call-up just a couple of weeks after his IPL teammate Tilak Varma made his international debut for the Indian team.

Varma ended up having a debut to remember, as he smacked two sixes within the first three deliveries of his T20I career. The Indian left-hander even got a congratulatory message from Brewis a day after his successful debut in West Indies.

The southpaw has now reciprocated the gesture, as he recently extended his wishes for the South African upon the latter’s maiden call-up to the national side.

Varma extends best wishes to Brewis ahead of debut series

Batting prodigies Tilak Varma and Dewald Brewis were roped in by the Mumbai Indians franchise ahead of the 2022 season of the IPL. The two batting barbarians, both 20 years of age, were made to toil away in domestic competitions for nearly two years before earning their first international caps for their respective countries.

Notably, both might even make their debuts in the same month, as a Brewis-affiliated South African team will go up against Australia on August 30, i.e., less than four weeks after Varma played his first international for India.

The Indian cricketer took to his Instagram account and extended his best wishes to his South African-based Mumbai Indians teammates ahead of the latter's debut international series. Along with posting a screenshot of their video call, Varma wrote in the caption:

"Congratulations on your call up brother! So happy and proud of you."

Varma and Brewis' camaraderie has often drawn comparisons with another Indian-South African IPL teammate duo of Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers. Moreover, due to their innovative batting styles and explosive strike rates, the young Proteas batter has often been compared with de Villiers.

With both cricketers earning their debuts mere months before the 2023 ODI World Cup, they might well get drawn into the national squads for their respective countries at the tournament. In that case, the two players will likely square off when both India and South Africa face each other on November 5 in a league game at Kolkata's iconic Eden Gardens.
