Kohli And Rohit Sharma's Future In Danger? Gambhir To Take Tough Decisions After BGT

Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar has been asked to stay in Australia for the entire Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, and it’s not just to watch the games. The BCCI wants him and head coach Gautam Gambhir to sit down and plan the future for Indian cricket.

There have been whispers that Agarkar and Gambhir haven’t exactly been on the same page lately, especially during the recent India vs New Zealand Test series. Selections, strategies, and pitch decisions – they didn’t always see eye to eye. So, this long tour in Australia is the perfect chance for both to iron things out and come up with a solid roadmap.

Agarkar and Gambhir to Map Out Team India's Future

The BCCI knows that Indian cricket needs a clear plan, especially after some shaky performances. A source even mentioned that both Agarkar and Gambhir understand that poor showings at home don’t sit well with fans and critics.

So, this time together will be all about building a team with strong backups for the coming years. They’re looking at a good year-and-a-half to get things right, so both need to agree on the way forward. A solid plan can help India avoid any slips in future big games.

“Both Agarkar and Gambhir know that such poor performance in India will trigger widespread criticism, which is justified. Since it’s a long tour, both can sit together and discuss how things can be taken forward after the tour. Both will need at least a year and a half to build a team with strong backup. That’s where both have to be on the same page about the process,” told a BCCI source to Times of India.

Champions Trophy and WTC Final: The Last Dance Rohit & Kohli?

Then there’s the big question about the senior players: Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Ravindra Jadeja. They’re all over 36, and while they’re still vital to the team, the BCCI is starting to think about what’s next.

The non-performance of some of these senior stars was a factor in India’s series loss against New Zealand. And with two major ICC tournaments coming up in the next 8–9 months, the BCCI wants to see where the seniors stand.

Agarkar and Gambhir plan to talk with these legends about their future plans. While they’ve all stepped back from T20s, the 2027 ODI World Cup and the next World Test Championship Final could still be on their radar.

But the selectors want to know how these players see themselves fitting into the team over the next couple of years. It’s likely to be a tough conversation, but both the selectors and the players know it’s essential for the team’s future.

“These senior players are still a very important part of the team. But one may expect some tough discussions as well. The seniors will be kept in the loop about the vision of the selectors and coach. They will be asked to share how they plan their careers going into the next World Test Championship cycle and the ODI World Cup being about two years away,” added the source.

It’s going to be interesting to see how it all pans out, especially with the next big tournaments and the future of some of India’s cricketing legends on the line.
