KL Rahul's promising and encouraging comeback trail may have been disrupted by quadriceps pain, but the batter appears increasingly likely to return to the Indian side in time for the third Test against England in Rajkot.

Rahul was ruled out of the second Test in Visakhapatnam on Monday (January 29) after "complaining of quadriceps pain", having endured surgery for the same last year after hurting his hamstring on May 1 playing for the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in IPL 2023.

The elegant Karnataka right-hander made a memorable hundred in his comeback Test last month in Centurion and backed it up with a skillful 86 in the first innings in Hyderabad. He would've been hoping to build on his gains with the second Test in Vizag, especially as India desperately need to bounce back from their painstaking defeat.

According to a report by Times of India, Rahul's injury is not too serious at this stage and he should be deemed ripe to take on the Englishmen again in Rajkot for the third Test of the series after undergoing a short rehab at the NCA.

"Rahul could perhaps return later in this series," a BCCI source privy to the developments told TOI on Tuesday.

An elongated gap between the second and the third Test has raised the Indian team management's hopes to have their in-form batter back in the playing XI. Meanwhile, it is touted that an injured Ravindra Jadeja would miss the entire Test series against England.

The second Test in Vizag is scheduled to conclude on February 6 but the third Test doesn't start until February 15, giving Rahul a two-week gap from now to then to attain full recovery from his recurring pain.
