KL Rahul requests BCCI [Source: @BCCI/X.com]
KL Rahul, who recently played in the IPL for Delhi Capitals, has asked the Indian cricket board (BCCI) to let him join the India A team in England. This is ahead of India’s five-match Test series there. Although he is already part of the main Test squad, he wasn’t originally included in the A team.
But after his request, the selectors, led by Ajit Agarkar, have agreed to send him. He’ll miss the first unofficial Test but will be available for the second one.
With big names like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli missing from the tour, Rahul’s presence will add much-needed experience to the batting lineup. It’s a positive sign that Rahul is focusing on preparing for international cricket instead of just the IPL. His previous experience playing in England could also be very useful for the team.
Why Did KL Rahul Make This Request?
According to a report by The Times of India, Rahul wanted to start preparing early, but bad weather in Mumbai and Bengaluru disrupted his training plans. So he asked to head to England sooner and get some match practice with the India A team.
Rahul had done something similar before India’s Test series in Australia, he played for India A before the main squad arrived, and he ended up performing decently there, scoring 255 runs in five matches.
As for where Rahul will bat in the upcoming England series, that’s still uncertain. If opener Abhimanyu Easwaran performs well in the first unofficial Test, Rahul might bat lower down the order, possibly at number six. Otherwise, Rahul could open the innings like he has done before.
The India A team, led by Abhimanyu Easwaran, starts their tour with a match against the England Lions today in Canterbury. The full Indian squad will also play a practice match on June 13 in Beckenham. The first official Test match of the series begins on June 20 in Leeds. Notably, nine players from the India A team are also part of the main Test squad.
