New Zealand captain Kane Williamson will likely miss the remaining matches of the T20I series against Pakistan due to his hamstring struggles.

The great batter picked up the injury during the second T20I played on Sunday (January 14) in Hamilton and could miss the next three matches of the series, as per head coach Gary Stead.

Williamson, who was already due to rest for the third T20I scheduled in Dunedin on Wednesday (January 17), might also skip the fourth and the fifth matches of the Pakistan series in Christchurch on January 19 and 21, respectively.

'We'll make sure he's right for Tests'- Stead on Williamson

After New Zealand's win to take a 2-0 lead over the tourists, Stead said the team management wishes to take no risks over Williamson's injury ahead of the critical Test series against Australia and South Africa next month.

"With the Test matches so close as well and in the big scheme of things (they are) a higher priority, I think we'll try and make sure he's right for that," the coach was quoted as saying by AFP.

Williamson, who was forced to retire hurt after reaching 26 off just 15 deliveries at the Seddon Park, could play only two games into his much-awaited T20I comeback for the BlackCaps. The ace cricketer also had to deal with an ACL injury for the best part of last year ahead of the ICC World Cup 2023.

With Mitchell Santner set to play stand-in captain in Williamson's absence, Stead also confirmed that Tim Seifert will be added to the playing XI in the batter's place. Seifert could also play in place of keeper-batter Devon Conway, who might be rested for the back end of the series.

The Test matches against the Aussies and the Proteas attain great importance to the Kiwis' World Test Championship (WTC) fortunes, and Williamson will be determined to recover in time for the pair of two-Test series.
