Tennis legend Novak Djokovic expressed gratitude towards Indian batting great Virat Kohli for his kind words in honour of his 'text buddy' before the second T20I of the three-match series against Afghanistan on Sunday (January 14).

In an interview with BCCI, Kohli revealed how his friendship and duo with Djokovic began organically after an Instagram DM a few years back. Since then, they've held mutual respect and continue speaking regularly.

Kohli hailed Djokovic as one of the global athletes who have achieved excellence in their field and overall journey and said such inter-sport bondings and friendships help inspire the next lot of aspiring sportspersons.

Djokovic Responds To Kohli's Praise

During the interaction, Kohli amusingly revealed that he was initially hesitant to talk to the tennis great. However, he pressed the message button on Djokovic's Instagram profile and was surprised to find out that he only had sent him the message first.

Kohli, who said he hadn't checked his DM until then, wanted to make sure if Djokovic had really messaged him and verified if it was him only or a fake account. Upon verification, the two chatted and developed a lovely bond which has stayed since.

Having earlier congratulated Kohli for reaching his 50th One-Day International century during the World Cup 2023 with a story post, Djokovic now thanked his cricketing friend with another such post on Monday (January 15) for all the words he used in his praise.

Djokovic also requested Kohli to catch up over an interesting clash where the individuals exchange sports and play each other's game. Kohli would love to accept the invitation and play tennis with his favourite racket holder.

The legend made an enterprising comeback to the T20I format with a lovely cameo of 29 off 12 balls in Indore and will be hoping to continue in the same vein via the third and final match of the series in Bangalore on Wednesday (January 17).
