Kane Williamson struggling with cramps vs PAK (X.com)
In an unfortunate turn of events, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson was forced to cut short his stay at the crease against Pakistan in the second T20 international of the five-game series due to severe cramps.
The second T20 fixture of the five-game series between Pakistan and New Zealand kicked off earlier today at Seddon Park, Hamilton. Pakistan's newly minted T20 captain Shaheen Afridi surprisingly opted to bowl first after winning the toss despite getting hammered in the series' inaugural game.
Needless to say, the move backfired once again as the men in green's front-line pacer, Haris Rauf, got hit for as many as 30 runs in his first spell. From then on, the Kiwis fed on the momentum to put over 60 runs on board in the powerplay.
After the hosts lost Devon Conway, skipper Kane Williamson walked out to the middle to support an in-form Finn Allen from the other hand. While Allen was hammering the Pakistan bowlers from one end, Williamson played second fiddle's role to perfection until physical adversities played spoilsport.
After the completion of the 10th over, Williamson looked in extremely bad shape as drinks were called. Moreover, after consulting with the medical team and physiotherapists, the skipper decided to walk off and was eventually declared retired hurt.
While the exact cause of the abrupt departure is yet unknown, cramps are anticipated to be the likely cause.
Additionally, it is still unclear if the batter will return with his batting gear again. But if the cramps or whatever issue bothering the batter subsides, the Kiwi skipper could be seen leading his side in the field in the second innings.
That being said, it is crucial for New Zealand that the captain returns to the field as soon as possible. Defending any target won't be a cakewalk on this wicket, and they need Williamson's expertise to set foot right into the chase.
