Bangladesh A team cricketer, Tofael Ahmed Raihan, has been officially charged in a serious sexual assault case. Police submitted a charge sheet against the pace-bowling all-rounder on December 11.

He has been accused of assaulting a young woman after allegedly luring her with promises of marriage.

Police say evidence proves assault allegations

According to investigators, Tofael Ahmed Raihan has been charged under Section 9(1) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, one of the strictest laws in Bangladesh dealing with sexual offences.

Sub-Inspector Md Samiul Islam confirmed that police found enough preliminary evidence to proceed with the case.

The charge sheet states that the woman first met Tofael in January this year through Facebook. Their chats on Messenger soon became regular, and Tofael reportedly developed a romantic relationship with her.

At first, the woman was not interested, but she later agreed after Tofael repeatedly promised that he wanted to marry her.

According to the complaint, on January 31, Tofael took the woman to a hotel in Gulshan. There, he allegedly introduced her as his wife and then forced her into sexual acts without her consent.

The woman told police that the Bangladesh player again assured her he would marry her soon and asked her to stay quiet. She also said that the cricketer assaulted her multiple times after that.

When she finally pressed him about marriage, Tofael allegedly refused. Feeling cheated and traumatised, the woman filed a case on August 1, accusing him of repeated sexual violence.

The investigation found supporting evidence, including her initial statement, hotel booking records, and medical reports, which strengthened the case against the Bangladesh cricketer.

Tofael continues to play for Bangladesh despite criminal proceedings

In September, the High Court granted Tofael six weeks of anticipatory bail, asking him to surrender after the bail ended. But despite the court’s clear instructions, he did not surrender.

Shockingly, during this period, Tofael even travelled with Bangladesh’s second-string team to Hong Kong for a six-a-side cricket tournament after securing bail.

The next hearing in the case is set for December 30, when the court will officially review the charge sheet.
