New Zealand offspinner Eden Carson will have surgery on her bowling elbow as she faces six months of recovery, ruling her out of the upcoming home season and the 2026 T20 World Cup.

Carson initially injured her right elbow during a pre-World Cup training camp in Dubai. She played through the pain in the tournament, featuring in all seven of New Zealand’s league matches and taking two wickets.

"The recovery timeline means she will not be available for the remainder of the home summer nor New Zealand's title defence at the 2026 T20 World Cup," New Zealand Cricket said in a statement.

Team management supports Carson’s decision

With the injury affecting her bowling arm, head coach Ben Sawyer said the team had opted for surgery to prioritise her long-term future.

"We're all really gutted for Eden. The team has a big six months ahead and I know how difficult it was for her to make the decision to go through with the surgery now, but I fully support it,” Sawyer said.

"It'll obviously be a huge loss for the team not having Eden available, especially for the T20 World Cup, where she played a big role for us last year. At just 24, she's still got a long career ahead, so it's important we look forward and prioritise getting her back on the park and fully fit,” added the head coach.

Eden Carson was a key part of New Zealand’s T20 World Cup-winning campaign in 2024, taking nine wickets in the tournament. Speaking of her international exposure, Carson debuted in 2022 and took 39 wickets in T20I cricket while bagging 18 in ODIs.

Carson’s last appearance was against England Women in the Women’s World Cup 2025, where she went wicketless from her two overs.
