Senior English batter Joe Root is at the brink of attaining a huge batting record ahead of the second ODI of their three-match series against West Indies. The match itself will be hosted by the Sophia Gardens in Cardiff on Sunday, June 1.
Root minted a confident 57 from 65 balls in the series-opener in Birmingham earlier this week as England amassed a match-winning total of 400-8 from 50 overs upfront.

Joe Root, who leads England’s all-time run-scoring charts in Tests, might well become his country’s leading run-aggregator in ODIs too on Sunday, June 1. The cricketer will take field for England in the second ODI of the series against West Indies by finding himself only 42 runs behind the overall ODI run tally of 2019 World Cup winning captain Eoin Morgan.
Root has so far pulled 6,916 runs for England from 167 innings at a prolific batting average of 48.02. The elegant right-hander has plundered 17 tons and 42 half-centuries in the process.
Morgan, on the other hand, retired with 7,701 ODI runs from 230 innings. However, he compiled 6,957 of those runs for England from 207 innings at an average of 39.75 and at a strike rate of 93.89.

Joe Root already sits at the top of England’s Test chain with 13,006 runs from 279 innings spanning 153 matches. He leads former England captain and ex-opener Alastair Cook (12,472 runs) by over 500 runs.
Root, along with the rest of his English teammates, will now face West Indies in the second and third ODI matches on June 1 and June 3 respectively.
