Joe Root Vows To Support New Captain In England's Transition Period
However, Joe Root has now confirmed that he will not be the England captain again, and has had his time at the helm. He added that his time as captain of England in Test cricket produced below-par results and he has now moved on.
He stated that Brendon McCullum, the coach and whoever would become the new captain will enjoy full support from him and they would look to go back at glory days of the period between 2015 and 2019. Harry Brook is the prime candidate to lead England in the ODI and T20I formats as he recently got the taste of leadership in the ODI series against Australia.
Rob Key, the Director of Cricket also mentioned that they are considering Ben Stokes for the role as well. Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum have gelled well in Test leadership role, and there are hopes that the duo can replicate it in white-ball cricket too.
As far as Joe Root is concerned, he is not in the scheme of things in T20I cricket, but remains an integral part of the ODI and Test setup. Thus, his role would be crucial in the upcoming couple of years, as England try to rebuild towards better future.
