The stage is set for highly anticipated clash between Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2025 at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday. However, as excitement builds ahead of this crucial playoff encounter, concerns over the weather have emerged raising questions about what happens if the game is washed out.
PBKS Seek First Final Since 2014, MI Eye Sixth Title
PBKS, led by Shreyas Iyer, are eyeing for a historic return to the IPL final for the first time in over a decade. Meanwhile, MI the most successful franchise in IPL history with five titles are looking to secure their spot in yet another final.
This match follows Qualifier 1 (PBKS vs RCB) and the Eliminator (GT vs MI), both held at Mullanpur Stadium in Mohali. Due to recent geopolitical tensions and security concerns, the BCCI revised the playoff schedule, relocating the final rounds of the tournament, including Qualifier 2 and the final, to Ahmedabad.
Will Rain Play Spoilsport In PBKS vs MI?
According to AccuWeather.com, there is a 5% chance of rain during the match in Ahmedabad. Although the probability is relatively low, the threat of a washout cannot be completely dismissed.
No Reserve Day For Qualifier 2
Unlike the final, which has a provision for a reserve day, no such situation has been outlined for Qualifier 2. This means that if adverse weather leads to a complete washout, PBKS will secure a place in the IPL 2025 final as they have a better NRR than MI.
Extra Time Allocated To Maximize Play
To avoid such a scenario and ensure the match is completed, the BCCI have incorporated extra time provisions into the playing conditions. According to Clause 13.7.3 of the IPL Playing Conditions:
- An additional 120 minutes is available in the event of a delayed start or interruption.
- The extra time will be used before reducing any innings.
- Time allocated for strategic time-outs and innings changeover can be reduced if necessary to maximize playing time.
- For Super Over scenarios, the 10-minute changeover is excluded from the extra time calculations.
