Jasprit Bumrah will not play VHT 2025-26 [Source: @Dnn24Network/X]
After the likes of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are set to feature in the prestigious Vijay Hazare Trophy for their respective sides, Delhi and Mumbai, the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA), the home association of Jasprit Bumrah, issued a major update on the India pace star’s participation.
The GCA confirmed that although the BCCI has made it mandatory for all Indian players to represent their domestic sides when not on national duty, Jasprit Bumrah will not play for Gujarat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy.
Why will Jasprit Bumrah not play VHT 2025-26?
According to GCA secretary Anil Patel, Bumrah will miss the tournament as he has been advised to rest.
“Bumrah will not feature in VHT as he is taking rest," GCA secretary Anil Patel was quoted as saying by the TOI.
It is understood that the BCCI has granted Jasprit Bumrah a special leeway for workload management due to his two back injuries over the last three years, which have kept him sidelined for an extended period.
As a result, the BCCI has allowed the pacer to skip domestic matches to ensure he remains fresh for major tournaments, especially with the World Cup looming in February 2026.
When will Bumrah next play cricket?
This decision also indicates that Bumrah is unlikely to feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against New Zealand, scheduled to begin on January 11, 2026.
However, his return to action is expected in the T20I series, which will also serve as part of his preparation for the T20 World Cup 2026.
Nevertheless, excluding Bumrah, his teammates, Shubman Gill, Ravindra Jadeja, KL Rahul, Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson and Arshdeep Singh, among others, will feature in at least two matches of the one-day tournament.
