SRH and CSK registered comprehensive wins on the second day of the IPL 2025 season over Rajasthan Royals and Mumbai Indians respectively. CSK’s legendary stumper and former captain MS Dhoni shut down retirement rumours. In other news, New Zealand team secured their five-match T20I series over Pakistan with a game to spare.

Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest cricketing news that emerged out of Sunday, March 23.

SRH Shatter Records With Big Win Vs RR

SRH walloped Rajasthan Royals in a high-scoring cracker in match two of the IPL 2025 season at Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium. Batting first, the ‘Orange Army’ racked up 286-6 from 20 overs, their second-highest total in IPL history, with blistering number three Ishan Kishan plundering his maiden IPL ton with 106* runs from just 47 balls. Travis Head also blasted a sizzling 31-ball 67 at the top of the order as the hosts raced to one of the fastest team 100s in IPL.

In response, Rajasthan Royals fought valiantly but managed to conjure just 242-6 to fall 44 runs short of their target. Opening batter Sanju Samson made 66 off 37, while Dhruv Jurel clobbered a six-laden 35-ball 70 before Shubham Dubey’s 11-ball 34* reduced Rajasthan Royals’ defeat margin.

Rachin, Ruturaj 50s Does It For CSK

In the second match of the IPL double-header on March 23, fluent half-centuries from captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (53 off 26) and Rachin Ravindra (65* off 45) took CSK past Mumbai Indians with four wickets and five balls to spare in Chennai. For Mumbai Indians, young uncapped spinner and IPL debutant Vignesh Puthur picked up three wickets in his fighting four-over spell of 3-32.

Earlier in the match, Mumbai Indians carted 155-9 from 20 overs, largely owing to Deepak Chahar’s late fireworks. Fast bowler Khaleel Ahmed (3-29) and Afghanistan-based spinner Noor Ahmad (4-18) shattered Mumbai Indians’ line-up by picking up seven wickets between them.

Allen, Bracewell And Duffy Take NZ 3-1 Up Over Pakistan

New Zealand went 3-1 up over Pakistan in Mount Maunganui in their five-match T20I series. Batting first in the fourth T20I, New Zealand openers Tim Seifert (44 off 22) and Finn Allen (50 and 20) led the way with yet another blistering start at the top of the order. Captain Michael Bracewell also smeared 46 unbeaten runs off 26 balls to counter Haris Rauf’s tight three-wicket haul (3-27).

Chasing 221 to stay alive in the series, Pakistan folded up for just 105 to fall 115 runs short of their target. For New Zealand, fast bowlers Jacob Duffy (4-20) and Zakary Foulkes (3-25) ran riot over the ‘Men in Green’ by claiming seven wickets between them.

MS Dhoni Puts Retirement Speculation To Rest

Legendary Indian wicketkeeper-batter MS Dhoni put all speculation of his retirement to rest with a trademark response. Ahead of CSK’s IPL 2025 opening clash against Mumbai Indians in Chennai, Dhoni jokingly stated that he can play “as long as he wants” for the CSK franchise, and added that the team management will “drag” him to play even if he is “in a wheelchair”.

It is worth noting that MS Dhoni was retained by the CSK franchise for IPL 2025 under the ‘uncapped player’ category. He even inflicted a lightning-quick stumping in their opening match against Mumbai Indians to get rid of Suryakumar Yadav.

BCCI Expands Fourth Umpire’s Role In IPL

The BCCI has expanded the role of fourth umpires in IPL matches. As per BCCI’s note, the fourth umpires are now authorized to check the size of the player’s bats at any point of the match, even during training sessions. The fourth umpires will also be required to monitor bowlers who are leaving fields after completing their quota of overs. The BCCI note further stated that no players or team management member should distract fourth umpires for any grievance against a decision.
