The much-anticipated announcement of the retention rules for the upcoming Indian Premier League 2025 season is on the horizon. The IPL Governing Council is all set to meet on Saturday (September 28) at 11:30 a.m. at the Four Seasons Hotel in Bengaluru.
As per Cricbuzz, the announcement is expected to be made within a 24-hour window, but the meeting is scheduled to take place in just a couple of hours. The recent decision of the IPL Governing Council to convene a meeting on Saturday was indeed a surprise, with notices sent to members only the previous evening.
Following the meeting, an official announcement is expected. However, there's a buzz in the air that the crucial retention policy might be deliberated upon at the general body meeting scheduled in Bengaluru on Sunday, before any public disclosures are made.
IPL Mega-auction could take place at Saudi Arabia
The governing body will also select the date and venue for the mega-auction in addition to choosing the number of player retentions. As of now, there are indications that the auction will take place at the end of November in one of the Gulf cities. Saudi Arabia is said to be keen on hosting the event, with Riyadh being a strong contender if GC clears the proposal.
The number of player retentions is a hot topic of speculation, with estimates ranging from 2 to 8 players per team. The BCCI is expected to reach a consensus, possibly retaining 5 to 6 players with the Right to Match (RTM) option.
These decisions are the result of extensive discussions held in the first week of July between the BCCI and the IPL team owners, where feedback on various league matters, including player retention, was sought.
