With the IPL 2025 mega auction expected to take place in late November, the retention lists is one of the crucial component of the IPL. In the new rules released for the upcoming edition, each franchise can retain a maximum of six players, with specific rules applying to capped and uncapped players. 

The teams can hold on to up to five capped players, whether Indian or overseas, and a maximum of two uncapped players. This framework is designed to give teams a balance of experienced and emerging talent as they brace for a roster shake-up. 

Besides, these changes, another major update is the  Right to Match (RTM) rule, which has been redefined to benefit both players and teams. With this rule the franchises are allowed to re-acquire released players by matching the highest bid placed for that player during the auction.
