As the IPL 2025 Retention deadline inches closer, the excitement is evident. The date is set for Thursday, October 31, and the event is slated to enthrall fans, franchises as well as players. Retentions before a mega auction always provide a bit of suspense, and this year will be no different, especially in the light of new regulations forcing franchises to make radical adjustments.
IPL 2025 Retention Rules
The IPL Governing Council has charted out new guidelines for the 2025-27 cycle. In the new cycle, IPL franchise can retain up to six players. Teams can choose a combination of direct retentions or use the Right to Match (RTM) card. This marks the return of RTM card for the first time since the 2018 Mega Auction.
The new retention rule limits each franchise to retain a maximum of five capped players and two uncapped players. However, only six players can be retained in total, either through direct retention or RTM.
An Overview of the New Price Slabs For Retention
The purse has been increased to INR 120 crore. Here’s a look at the new retention price slabs”
- First three capped players: INR 18 crore, INR 14 crore, and INR 11 crore.
- Two additional capped players: INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore.
- Uncapped retention: INR 4 crore.
If an IPL franchise decides to retain a maximum of five capped players, it will cost them INR 75 crore, and one uncapped player will add INR 4 crore to the tally. This means the franchise heads into the auction with just INR 41 crore.
Flexible Retention Budget
Franchises do have a bit of flexibility in the allocation while the price slabs are fixed. Instead of figuring out how best to spread INR 75 crore around, a team might take in as little as say just INR 20 crore instead and re-allocate the rest for other players.
If the retention amount goes over the limit, it will lead to further deduction from the auction purse. This flexibility enables teams to allocate their budget in smarter ways through balancing player priority and team synergy.
IPL retention Deadline
The IPL 2025 Retention Deadline is set for 5 PM IST on Thursday, October 31 when all ten teams are supposed to submited their list of retained and released players to the BCCI.
