New Zealand Women, fresh from their victorious T20 World Cup campaign in the UAE, were humbled by the Indian women’s team in the ODI arena on October 24. Turning up at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, the ‘White Ferns’ failed to chase down India’s 227-run total to concede an early 0-1 lead in the three-match series.
Sophie Devine and co. will now face their Indian counterparts in a must-win second ODI match at the same venue on October 27. Ahead of the much-awaited contest, here we take a look at New Zealand’s probable XI.
Amelia Kerr Ruled Out Of Series Due To An Injury
Mere days after delivering a ‘Player of the Tournament’ winning performance at the 2024 Women’s T20 World Cup, Amelia Kerr reveled herself with another emphatic all-round spectacle, albeit against India in the opening ODI of their three-match series in Ahmedabad.
The cricketer picked up sensational figures of 4-42, and scored a fighting 23-ball 25* in a tense chase. Amelia’s efforts, however, were proffered in vain as New Zealand Women succumbed to a huge 59-run defeat in the series opener. Moreover, the 24-year-old also tore her left quadricep muscle in the game to be ruled out of the remainder of the series against India.
With Amelia Kerr out of contention from the playing XI, the New Zealand team management will likely replace the young all-rounder with fellow 2024 T20 World Cup winner Lea Tahuhu in the line-up.
Suzie Bates and Georgie Plimmer will be expected to continue as New Zealand openers, even though the two blistering cricketers failed to lay out a concrete start in the first ODI a couple of days ago. Lauren Down, captain Sophie Devine, all-rounder Brooke Halliday and Maddy Green will likely constitute New Zealand’s middle-order.
Isabella Gaze will once again serve as New Zealand’s wicketkeeping option while Jess Kerr, Lea Tahuhu, Molly Penfold and Eden Carson will helm the bowling attack for the visitors.
