In the latest IPL news, there is a great chance that the defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) won't retain their most loyal player, Andre Russell and will release him ahead of the mega auction.
As per RevSportz sources, Russell is not a sure-shot retention for KKR as the franchise are exploring other options as well. The reports stated that KKR are still contemplating on the decision, but Russell is most likely to be released as the retention deadline day is just around the corner.
Russell is 36-years-old, and perhaps KKR don't want to bank on someone who is not getting any younger. Speculations are that KKR are looking to retain players who can serve them for a longer period of time and thus Russell is not on their minds at the moment.
The dynamic all-rounder had a terrific IPL campaign last season. With the bat he slammed 222 runs in 14 matches, at a strike-rate of 185. He also delivered with the ball as KKR won the IPL title for the 3rd time.
In 14 games, Russell scalped 19 wickets, at 15.53, showcasing his skills in both the departments of the game.
If not Russell, then who will KKR retain?
If KKR decide to release Andre Russell, they might look to retain captain Shreyas Iyer, star all-rounder, Sunil Narine and Rinku Singh will also be retained. However, there is a good chance that Mitch Starc, who was the most expensive player in IPL 2024 auction will be released ahead of the auctions.
KKR can also make use of the uncapped player rule and retain Harshit Rana, as this will be a masterstroke and KKR will get back a quality bowler in their side.
