Matthew Wade, the star Australian keeper has announced his international retirement on Tuesday, thus putting an end to a stellar 13-year long career. Despite hanging his boots at the international level, Wade will continue to play in domestic cricket, BBL and other franchise leagues.

Matthew Wade, made his international debut in 2011, and has represented Australia in 36 Tests, 97 ODIs and 92 T20Is, with his last appearance coming in the T20 World Cup 2024. Interestingly, Wade will join the Australian coaching staff for their upcoming white ball series against the visiting Pakistan side. He has landed the role of wicketkeeping and fielding coach for the upcoming series.

Speaking on his retirement, an emotional Wade said: "I was fully aware my international days were most likely over at the end of the last T20 World Cup. My international retirement and coaching has been a constant conversation with George (Bailey) and Andrew (McDonald) over the past six months.

"Coaching has been on my radar over the last few years and thankfully some great opportunities have come my way, for which I am very grateful and excited. "I will continue to play BBL and the odd franchise league over the summer months but around those commitments as a player I am investing heavily in my coaching.

Wade will forever be remembered for his memorable knock against Pakistan in the 2021 T20 World Cup semi finals. Pakistan had the upper hand and had one foot in the finals, but Wade slammed 41* off 17 balls and sealed the deal for the Aussies as they reached the finals and won the tournament.

Wade names his replacement

Wade has touted Josh Inglis to be his successor as Australia begin a new journey without the experienced left-handed batter. Inglis has been one of the best keeper-batters across the world and he certainly has some big shoes to fill as Australia eye the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The Australian team will benefit from Wade's experience as the explosive southpaw has earned his Level 3 coaching certificate and dreams of becoming a coach someday.
