On Monday, Gary Kirsten dropped a bombshell and resigned from the post of Pakistan white-ball coach, a decision which sent shockwaves. Kirsten, alongside red-ball coach, Jason Gillespie was appointed just six months ago, but his tenure was short-lived as turmoil continues his Pakistan cricket.

As per reports, the former World Cup winning coach wasn't happy with how things panned out with the PCB, as the coach wasn't allowed to have any say in the team selection. In a panicking decision, PCB named Gillespie as the interim replacement, till the time they don't hire a suitable candidate.

As per a PTI report, both Kirsten and Gillespie were not happy that the coaches had no say in the team combinations. They felt their powers were taken away and as a result, Kirsten took a drastic step.

“The problem is both Kirsten and Gillespie were not happy with their sudden demotion in powers with the selectors given powers to call all the shots,” a source told the agency.

Who can replace Kirsten as white-ball coach?

As of now, there are two front-runners to replace Gary Kirsten. One option is to let assistant coach, Azhar Mahmood become the head coach, and the second one is to appoint Aaqib Javed. The current chief selector, Javed had disputes with Kirsten, but is now consider as a strong option to replace the South African.

"The situation now is that the PCB has to appoint a new white-ball coach, given the number of white-ball commitments of the national team coming up and leading up to the Champions Trophy early next year,” the source stated. Meanwhile, current selector Aaqib Javed and Saqlain Mushtaq are in the running to be full-time white-ball coach for Pakistan cricket team.

For the upcoming white-ball tours of Zimbabwe and Australia, Gillespie will take the charge, however, with the Champions Trophy coming up in a couple of months, Pakistan need a full-time coach.
