Virat Kohli and Glenn Maxwell, the two RCB teammates are best of friends in today's time, but all was not well a couple of years ago between the two superstars. There was a time when the two cricketers had a cold war situation and Maxwell revealed that Kohli blocked him on Instagram.
In his book titled 'The Showman' Glenn Maxwell revealed that Kohli was the one who backed him when he joined RCB in 2021 after a turbulent times with the Punjab Kings. The relation grew over the years, but four years prior to Maxwell joining RCB, an incident took place which forced Kohli to block the Aussie star on Instagram.
"When I knew that I was going to RCB, Virat was the first guy to message me and welcome me to the team. When I turned up for the pre-IPL training camp, we obviously got chatting and spent a fair bit of time training together as you do. So I go to his social. media, follow him. Didn't even think about it before that. Never really crossed my mind. I was like 'I can’t find him," Maxwell said on the LiSTNR Sport podcast.
Why Kohli blocked Maxi? Here's the answer
So, during the 2017 Australia tour of India, Maxwell took a dig at Virat Kohli's shoulder injury. During the third Test match in Ranchi, Kohli hurt his shoulder while fielding and was taken off the field. When it was Australia's turn to bowl, Maxwell mocked Kohli as he clutched his right shoulder, the same way Kohli did when he got injured.
As a result of this injury, the then India Test skipper had to miss out on the last Test in Dharamsala as India clinched the series, 2-1.
"Then I went and asked him 'Have you blocked me on Instagram?' And he was like, 'Yeah probably. It was when you mocked me during that Test match. I think I got the sh*** and decided to block you. I was like 'yeah, that's fair enough'. So yeah, he ended up unblocking me, and we became great friends after that," added Maxwell.
Maxwell likely to be released by RCB this year
Having joined RCB in 2021, Maxwell had three brilliant seasons and was one of their star players. However, the 2024 season was a dismal one for the all-rounder, as he could only score 52 runs in 10 matches, at an average of 5.78.
With the IPL retention date coming up on October 31, there is a chance that RCB will release Maxwell ahead of the mega auction, as the team looks to rebrand itself with younger players.
