Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) showcased their brilliance by securing a decisive four-wicket win over Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 48 of IPL 2024 on Tuesday at the Ekana Stadium, propelling them to third place in the points table.

After being put in to bat first, Mumbai Indians struggled at the crease. Apart from Ishan Kishan's slow-paced 32 off 36 balls, Nehal Wadhera's gritty 46 off 41, and Tim David's explosive 35 off 18, the rest of the lineup failed to make a significant impact, culminating in a modest total of 144/7.

In response, Lucknow Super Giants, spearheaded by Marcus Stoinis' dynamic 62 off 45 balls, successfully reached the target with four balls to spare.

Here's the timeline of how LSG vs MI panned out in Lucknow-

Early Tremors Shake Mumbai's Start

Mumbai Indians, invited to bat first after losing the toss, stumbled out of the gate. The birthday boy, Rohit Sharma, fell early for just 4 runs to Mohsin Khan, setting a tone of dismay for MI.

The powerplay further unravelled MI’s lineup, with Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma departing for paltry scores of 10 and 7 respectively.

The cherry on the doom cake was Hardik Pandya, who walked back for a golden duck, leaving MI reeling at 28/4, marking the second-lowest powerplay score of the tournament.

Kishan and Wadhera Steady The Ship; Tim David Launches Late Assault

Despite the topsy-turvy start, opener Ishan Kishan held his nerve, knitting a crucial partnership with Nehal Wadhera. The duo brought some stability, steering MI to 57/4 at the halfway mark.

Their partnership added 53 runs before Kishan fell for a laboured 36 off 32 balls to Ravi Bishnoi. Wadhera continued the fight, scoring 46 off 41, but his dismissal by Mohsin Khan courtesy of a deadly yorker ended his resilient knock.

Tim David then took the mantle, blasting a quickfire 35 off 18 balls, filled with three boundaries and a six, pushing MI’s total to 144/7.

Arshin Kulkarni's Departs for Golden Duck on Debut

The chase began on a sour note for LSG as debutant Arshin Kulkarni returned to the pavillion without troubling the scorers, dismissed for a golden duck.

The youngster was trapped in front of the wicket by Nuwan Thusara, who bagged his first wicket of IPL 2024.

Stoinis and Rahul Steer the Recovery

Captain KL Rahul, alongside the dependable Marcus Stoinis, steadied the ship with a vital partnership.

The duo crafted a crucial fifty-run stand, during which Rahul unleashed an onslaught against Nuwan Thusara, hammering him for three fours and a six in a display of aggressive batting.

Rahul contributed a solid 28 before succumbing to Hardik Pandya, leaving the middle order with a foundation to build upon.

Stoinis Departs After Scoring Fifty; Pooran's Poise Clinches the Chase

Following Rahul’s dismissal, Stoinis continued the momentum with Deepak Hooda, forging another key partnership that brought LSG within striking distance of the target.

Although Stoinis eventually departed for a well-made 62 off 45 balls, the groundwork had been laid. A few wobbly moments ensued as LSG lost additional wickets towards the end.

But Nicholas Pooran kept his composure, steering his team across the finish line in the final over.

The southpaw ensured a four-wicket victory that was both hard-fought and well-deserved. With this win, LSG gained two crucial points to move to the third spot in the points table.
