Indian team under Jasprit Bumrah (Source:@toisports/X.com)
India have been a dominant force in world cricket and they have played well across the globe in the last decade or so. However, series wins in SENA countries are still rare and India last won a Test series in England in 2007. They had a great chance to win the series in the 2021 tour, and took a lead of 2-1 after four Tests with one game to go.
However, the final Test match was postponed due to Covid and the Test was then held in 2022 where Jasprit Bumrah led India in the absence of Rohit Sharma. The regular Indian skipper had COVID at that time and so Bumrah was given the opportunity to captained the country.
The match was at Edgbaston in Birmingham and India were well ahead at the end of first innings of both the teams. The visitors scored 416 while batting first and Rishabh Pant smashed a brilliant 146 off just 111 balls. Ravindra Jadeja too supported him well and scored 104 as India put up a strong first innings total despite James Anderson fifer.
India Throw Away Advantage With Poor Performance In Second Outing
In reply, England were bowled out for just 284 and only Jonny Bairstow displayed some fight with a counterattacking century. All Indian pacers bowled well and Mohammed Siraj bagged four while Jasprit Bumrah on captaincy debut took three wickets. India gained a lead of 132 runs, but England came out with great intent in the second innings and bowled out India for 245. Pujara and Pant scored fifties, but England were in with an outside chance in the final innings with 368 needed to win.
It was just the starting phase of Bazball and with pitch easing out, England came out all guns bazing in the final innings. The openers came up with a stand of 107 runs and then Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow smashed unbeaten centuries to take home team to a memorable victory by seven wickets. India messed up a chance to level the series and with Jasprit Bumrah once again at the helm in Test cricket, he would be looking to rectify mistakes in that game and come out with a win against mighty Aussies in Perth.
