Capping an eventful day in the world of cricket, here we take a look at five of the biggest news that emerged out of Tuesday, December 17.

India Avoid Follow-On After KL Rahul, Jadeja 50s

Team India successfully avoided follow-on on Day 4 of the Brisbane Test against Australia. With only 58 overs of play possible on another rain-marred day, the visitors lost captain and overnight batter Rohit Sharma to Pat Cummins early in the morning for just 10. Tottering at 74-5, KL Rahul punched out a majestic 84 from 139 balls and forged 67 fighting runs with fellow half-centurion Ravindra Jadeja. Following Rahul’s dismissal to Nathan Lyon, Jadeja extended his team’s total beyond the 200-run mark by hauling 77 runs off 123 deliveries.

Pat Cummins tilted the momentum back in Australia’s favour with the quick wickets of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Jadeja to finish the day with figures of 4-80. Facing a near certain follow-on at 213-9, Indian tailenders Akash Deep and Jasprit Bumrah unfurled some lusty hits late in the day to take their team to 252-9 before another early stumps. Deep (27* off 31) and Bumrah (10* off 27) will resume the Indian innings on Day 5 as they find themselves another 193 runs away from the hosts.

New Zealand Secure Consolation Win In Southee’s Swansong Test

New Zealand bowlers wrapped up England for just 234 in 47.2 overs to secure a huge 423-run consolation victory on Day 4, successfully avoiding a 0-3 series whitewash in the process. For England, overnight batters Jacob Bethell and Joe Root unleashed attacking half-centuries before New Zealand spinner Mitchell Santner triggered a colossal batting collapse.

Santner picked up four wickets to complete seven for the match, while fast bowlers Matt Henry and outbound Tim Southee snared two wickets apiece. Southee, in his final Test appearance, finished his career as New Zealand’s second highest wicket-taker in Tests, and the highest across all formats combined.

WI Women Level Up With India With Matthews’ All-Round Spectacle

West Indies Women consigned hosts India to a nine-wicket defeat in the second T20I at Navi Mumbai to level the three-match series with a game to spare. For the visitors, new ball bowlers Chinelle Henry and Deandra Dottin picked up two wickets each, while captain Hayley Matthews picked up the prized-scalps of Jemimah Rodrigues and half-centurion Smriti Mandhana to restrict the ‘Women in Blue’ to 159-9.

Chasing 160, Matthews packed 85 unbeaten runs from just 47 balls with 17 elegant boundaries to navigate West Indies to a nine-wicket win in just 15.4 overs.

Daniel Sams’ 31-Run Over Wins It For Sydney Thunder

Sydney Thunder upstaged Adelaide Strikers in Canberra in an exhilarating final-over finish with two balls and two wickets to spare. After the Strikers flourished to 182-8 despite scintillating three-wicket hauls from Lockie Ferguson and Chris Green, young Sam Konstas belted a 20-ball half-century at the top for the Thunder.

However, it was Daniel Sams’ 42*-run blinder from 18 balls that won it for the Thunder in the final over. In the penultimate over of the match off Lloyd Pope, Sams blasted three boundaries and three sixes to extract 30 runs from six legal deliveries (31 with a wide).
