Kamran Ghulam gave his batting teammate Saim Ayub a ‘death stare’ during Pakistan’s first ODI of the three-match series against South Africa on December 17. Turning up for his team at the Boland Park in Paarl, Ghulam arrived to the crease following the dismissal of captain Mohammad Rizwan at 52-3 in a chase of 240.
Just as he was finding his rhythm in the middle, the 29-year-old Pakistani cricketer was involved in a terrible mix-up with younger partner and opening batsman Saim Ayub.
Ghulam stares at Saim Ayub after miscalculated running
Chasing 240 runs for a win, Pakistan lost opener Abdullah Shafique, senior man Babar Azam and captain Mohammad Rizwan in quick succession to crash to 52-3 in 16 overs. Joining unbeaten opener Saim Ayub at the crease, number five batter Kamran Ghulam fended off the first 13 deliveries of his innings in a bid to lead Pakistan’s fighting recovery.
However, in the first ball of the 20th over, Ghulam nudged Aiden Markram towards his off-side and took off for a single. While his non-strike partner Saim Ayub entertained his intention by going down a couple of steps, the youngster froze as the ball went straight towards Tristan Stubbs at the cover region. Kamran Ghulam, left stranded in the middle, was run out by Stubbs and Proteas wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen as Pakistan slipped to 60-4 in their run-chase.
Earlier in the match, South Africa hauled 239-9 from 50 overs after winning the toss and opting to bat first. Heinrich Klaasen top-scored in the innings with a belligerent 86 from 97 balls, while captain Markram and openers Tony de Zorzi and Ryan Rickelton chipped in with swift 30s.
For Pakistan, spinner Agha Salman picked up four wickets in the innings at an expense of just 32 runs in eight overs. Abrar Ahmed prevented the South African tail from flourishing while Shaheen Afridi curtailed Klaasen’s rampage at the death.
