When England get going, they don't just win, they bulldoze the opposition. Over the years, the Three Lions have racked up some thumping wins in ODIs and every time they do, it is like they have dropped a cricketing sledgehammer.

Their latest 238-run hammering of West Indies at Edgbaston on Thursday is just another feather in their already well-plumed cap. Let’s take a closer look at England’s five biggest ODI wins in terms of runs.

5. 202-Run Win vs India, 1975 At Lord’s

Way back in 1975, during the very first World Cup, England didn’t just beat India, they ground them to a pulp. Dennis Amiss led the charge with a classy 137 off 147 balls, setting the tone for a massive total of 334/4 in 60 overs. This was the 70s with no fielding restrictions, no fancy powerplays, no big bats and yet, England looked like they were batting on a different planet.

India’s reply? A snooze-fest. Sunil Gavaskar’s infamous 36* off 174 balls felt more like a protest than a run-chase. With just 3 wickets down, India hobbled to 132 and handed England a 202-run win that remains etched in cricket legend.

4. 210-Run Win vs New Zealand, 2015 At Birmingham

England’s white-ball revolution was just getting started and this match was a wake-up call for the world. After losing Jason Roy first ball, England bounced back like a coiled spring. Joe Root’s classy 104 and Eoin Morgan’s fluent 50 laid the base but it was Jos Buttler who stole the show.

His 129 off 77 balls was absolute carnage that had New Zealand on the ropes. Add Adil Rashid’s quick-fire 69 and England finished with a mammoth 408/9, their highest score at the time.

The Kiwis, chasing 409, never really got going. Steven Finn breathed fire with the new ball, grabbing 4/35, while Rashid spun a web to pick four of his own with four wickets. Ross Taylor fought with 57, but the rest fell like dominoes. All out for 198 in just 31.1 overs, New Zealand were steamrolled as England walked away with a 210-run win.

3. 232-Run Win vs Netherlands, 2022 At Amstelveen

In 2022, and England were out for blood again, this time in Amstelveen. What happened there wasn’t just a win; it was a massacre. England smashed their way to the highest-ever ODI total of 498/4 with Jos Buttler going absolutely berserk, smashing 162* off just 70 balls.

Phil Salt (122), Dawid Malan (125) and Liam Livingstone (66) also joined the party, turning it into a run-fest for the ages. The Dutch never stood a chance. They tried. But chasing nearly 500 was like bringing a plastic spoon to a sword fight. England wrapped things up quickly and walked away with a 232-run win.

2. 238-Run Win vs West Indies, 2025 At Birmingham

This one’s hot off the press. On Thursday, England turned up at Edgbaston with a vengeance and dished out a thrashing to remember. Youngster Jacob Bethell stole the show with a brutal 82 off 53, helping England pile up 400/8.

Then came the bloodbath. Saqib Mahmood, Jamie Overton, and Adil Rashid ran through the Windies like a hot knife through butter. West Indies folded for just 162 in 26.2 overs. This was a statement win. England isn’t just rebuilding post the old guard, they are steamrolling into a new era. And Bethell might just be the next big thing.

1. 242-Run Win vs Australia, 2018 At Nottingham

This was the day England broke the game and left Australia in shambles. Trent Bridge turned into a run graveyard as England posted an eye-popping 481/6, the highest ODI total at the time. Bairstow blasted 139, Hales hammered 147 and Morgan’s 67 came at a stunning strike rate of 223. It was pure butchery.

Chasing 482? Australia may as well have tried to scale Mount Everest with a toothpick. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid picked up 7 between them, David Willey struck twice and the Aussies crumbled to 239 all out in 37 overs. England sealed a 242-run win, their biggest in ODI history against their arch-rivals.
