West Indies pacer Jayden Seales has been fined 15% of his match fee after a heated moment during the first Test match against Australia at Kensington Oval in Barbados. The fine comes as a result of Seales breaching the International Cricket Council (ICC) Code of Conduct.
Seales Reacts After Taking Pat Cummins' Wicket
The incident occurred on Day 1 of the first match, during the 55th over of Australia's first innings. Australian captain Pat Cummins was batting aggressively and had already scored 28 runs off just 14 balls. But Seales finally got the better of him with a clever delivery outside off-stump.
Cummins tried to go big again but ended up miscuing the shot. The ball went straight up in the air and was comfortably caught by Kraigg Brathwaite at mid-on. Right after taking the wicket, Seales pointed Cummins toward the dressing room in a clear sign of frustration.
ICC Code of Conduct Violation
According to the ICC, Seales was found guilty of violating Article 2.5 of the Code of Conduct. This article deals with using language, actions, or gestures that can be seen as disrespectful or could provoke a reaction from a batter after dismissal.
Seales acknowledged the gesture, saying: “Pat hit a couple of good shots off me and I just showed him where the dressing room was and there wasn't really anything in it.”
Match Fee Deduction and Demerit Point
As a result of the breach, Seales was fined 15 percent of his match fee and given one demerit point. This was his second offence in a 24-month period, bringing his total to two demerit points.
While it may not seem like a big deal, accumulating four or more demerit points can lead to a suspension from matches. So, players must be careful with their behavior on the field.
Jayden Seales and Windies Fight Back In First Match
Despite the incident, Seales continued to make an impact in the match. He took a total of six wickets, including that of Josh Inglis on Day 2.
Meanwhile, Windies batters Shai Hope (48) and captain Roston Chase (44) added a crucial 67-run partnership to give their team a 10-run lead in the first innings.
Australia ended Day 2 at 92/4, leading by 82 runs. With the Test evenly poised, both teams will be looking to push for dominance on Day 3.
