The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the annual player contracts for their senior Indian men cricketers for the 2023-24 period on February 28.

As many as 30 Indian players were spread across four different categories, with all-format attractions like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja finding themselves in the Grade A+ bracket.

Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, who made their respective international debuts for Team India earlier in February, might well find their names for a certain contract themselves if they manage to meet a particular criterion through India’s ongoing five-match Test series against England.

How can Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan receive BCCI contract?

Both Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan made their respective Team India debuts through India’s third Test of the ongoing series against England on February 15.

While Sarfaraz celebrated the occasion by pounding twin 60-plus knocks at Rajkot to star in India’s 434-run win, young wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel came to his own with a ‘Player of the Match’ performance next up at Ranchi.

With just two Tests to their profile so far, both Sarfaraz and Dhruv might well land a BCCI contract soon if they find their place in the Indian playing XI for their fifth and final Test of the series against the visiting Englishmen.

As per an official statement issued by the BCCI, a player who will feature in a minimum of three Test matches within the specified period (October 1st, 2023 to September 30th, 2024) will be included in Grade C category on a pro-rate basis. The statement reads:

“Additionally, athletes who meet the criteria of playing a minimum of 3 Tests or 8 ODIs or 10 T20Is within the specified period will automatically be included in Grade C on a pro-rata basis. For instance, Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, having played 2 Test matches so far, will be inducted into Grade C if they participate in the Dharamsala Test Match, i.e., the 5th Test of the ongoing series against England.”

As of now, BCCI’s Grade C contract features 15 Indian stars, including the likes of white-ball zealots Rinku Singh, Tilak Verma, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson as well as rising Test stars KS Bharat and Rajat Patidar.

Team India will now face England in the fifth and final Test of their series at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala. The much-awaited contest will be staged between March 7 and March 11.
