What happened when RCB finished at top in 2011? [Source: @RCBTweets/X.com]
Prior to the start of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season, many expected the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to pose little to no challenge for the title, but after 10 matches, they are at the top of the table, Virat Kohli has the Orange Cap and Josh Hazlewood is a proud holder of Purple Cap.
RCB were 4th in the table prior to the match against Delhi Capitals on Sunday, however, in a remarkable run-chase under pressure, Virat Kohli and more importantly, Krunal Pandya steered their side home as RCB won their 6th away game on a trot and went to the top of the table with 14 points and have a great chance of staying at the top when the league stage ends.
Hence, the question arises, what happened the last time RCB finished at the top of the points table?
Virat Kohli's RCB suffered a heartbreak
It was during the 2011 season when the Royal Challengers finished with the highest points after the league stage and headed into the finale which was contested against the defending champions, Chennai Super Kings.
RCB, had reached the finals in 2009 and suffered a heartbreak against Deccan Chargers and this time they were eager to win the title. However, the Super Kings had some other plans. Their opening pair of Michael Hussey and Murali Vijay added 159 runs for the opening wicket and laid a foundation for a big total. While Hussey departed for 63, Vijay missed out on his century by just 5 runs.
MS Dhoni, the Super Kings captain scored a brisk 13-ball 22 as CSK finished at 2015/5. The target was stiff and RCB lost wickets at regular intervals as the likes of Chris Gayle (0), Kohli (35), and AB de Villiers (18), couldn't do much and surrendered.
The lower middle order fought hard, but the target was too big to chase as they lost the match by 58 runs. RCB are once again top of the table, but will they suffer a same fate in 2025 season?.
