England’s T20 World Cup journey began in 2007 in South Africa under Paul Collingwood. The team struggled to find consistency and exited in the Super 8 stage.
Collingwood continued as captain in 2009 in England, but once again the side fell short, finishing sixth.
However, redemption arrived in 2010 in the West Indies, when Collingwood led England to their first-ever ICC title, lifting the T20 World Cup and changing the direction of England’s white-ball cricket forever.
The baton then passed to Stuart Broad, who captained England in 2012 (Sri Lanka) and 2014 (Bangladesh). However, the team failed to make deep runs in both tournaments, exiting in the Super stages.
That shift came under Eoin Morgan, arguably England’s most influential white-ball captain. Morgan led England to the final of the 2016 T20 World Cup in India, where they finished runners-up after a heartbreaking loss.
He then led the team to the semi-finals in 2021 in the UAE. After Morgan’s departure, Jos Butler led the team and won instant success.
During his tenure, England emerged victorious in the 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia, and they became the second team to win the T20 and ODI World Cups simultaneously. Buttler also led England to the semi-finals in 2024, though the title defence ended short.
Now, the spotlight turns to Harry Brook. Leading England at the T20 World Cup 2026 will be his first experience as captain in the tournament.
