Harbhajan Singh believes a particular Indian player from the current team can surpass Mitchell Starc to become the most expensive cricketer in the history of IPL. Notably, the former Indian off-spinner did not pick either Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, but instead chose the latter’s IPL teammate in the Mumbai Indians franchise.

Harbhajan believes this MI star can surpass Starc

On September 30, Harbhajan Singh took to X and claimed that if Mumbai Indians and Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah ever makes himself available in an IPL auction, the speedster would become the most expensive player in tournament’s history.

Representing a hypothetical scenario, Harbhajan surprisingly chose Bumrah over India’s perennial batting legends and some of IPL’s biggest star-attractions, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.

At the moment, Australian thunderbolt Mitchell Starc holds the record of being the most expensive player in the history of IPL auction. Back in December 2023, the speedster was acquired by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) franchise for a staggering sum of Rs.24.75 crores. Starc’s Australian teammate Pat Cummins was sold to Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) for Rs.20.50 crores at the same auction to become the second costliest purchase in IPL history.

As of now, Jasprit Bumrah as well as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are bracing themselves to learn their IPL 2025 mega auction fates. With franchises being allowed to retain a total of six players as per latest BCCI regulations, it remains to be seen if each of the three legendary Indian cricketers will be retained by their respective franchises.

The IPL 2025 mega auction is scheduled to be organized in either late-November or early-December later this year.
