Pakistan cricketer Ahmed Shehzad has once again made headlines by openly criticising the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). This time, his critique centers around the recently concluded 2024 Champions One-Day Cup, a domestic tournament aimed at discovering new talent for Pakistan cricket. Shehzad believes the competition was a financial failure and did not deliver on its promise of unearthing fresh talent.

Ahmed Shehzad did not mince words when discussing the tournament’s outcomes. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Shehzad expressed his disappointment, calling the Champions Cup a “huge mistake” and a “waste of money.” Shehzad questioned the tournament’s ability to produce new players and sarcastically mocked PCB whether they have found anyone with the caliber of Don Bradman in the tournament

"Where is the talent that everyone was cheering for, saying that this tournament had brought out a lot of talent? We didn’t see anyone stand out. It’s just the same old 8-10 faces we always talk about, and they’re the only ones we’re seeing. If a Bradman has come along that we somehow missed, please let us know. It’s the same players going in circles, and those are your tools. You’re not going to get anything else," Shehzad said.

Shehzad didn’t stop there, he also criticised the tournament but went further to highlight deeper issues within Pakistan cricket. According to Shehzad, the structural problems within the PCB are contributing to the overall decline in cricket standards, and no one within the organisation is willing to take responsibility for the ongoing failures.

"You’ve only wasted money. Hosting this tournament [Champions Cup] was a huge mistake, but no one is going to admit it. No one will raise their hand. The people you’ve recruited through favoritism in domestic cricket won’t say anything. Everyone will pass the blame onto someone else. This is the tragedy of your cricket, and this is how the structure of your cricket is operating," he further said.

Panthers Win Against Markhors In Champions Cup 2024 Final

The Panthers emerged victorious in the final, defeating the Markhors by five wickets. Shadab Khan led the Panthers to victory, hitting the winning six after his bowlers, including Mohammad Hasnain and Sajid Khan, restricted the Markhors to a low total of 122.

While the tournament crowned a deserving champion, it failed to meet its primary objective: discovering new talent for Pakistan cricket.
