In a massive setback to Australia's Cricket World Cup (CWC) 2023 plans, star all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is likely to miss the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against India starting September 22.

Maxwell, who was due to play in T20Is in South Africa, suffered an ankle injury in training ahead of the first match and is currently racing against time to remain fit for the global showpiece event in India in October.

The Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) player has been troubled with a leg injury and only recently came back to active cricket, having last played for Australia in Wankhede in March this year.

As quoted by ANI, the 34-year-old spoke about wanting to feature in ODIs against India, but the primary focus remains to be fit for the World Cup 2023.

Here's what Maxwell said

"I still want to play some part of that India series. But I'm not feeling any pressure on it. The selectors and the staff have been brilliant with me as well. They don't want to put too much pressure on me to sort of set that date because they know they've got a bit of extra time before the World Cup.

So, instead of rushing it and probably putting myself a week or two behind, being able to give myself extra time and make sure we get through the whole tournament,

Maxwell has played for Australia in two World Cups - 2015 and 2019 - having won the title in the former edition.  Apart from Maxwell, Australia also have injury concerns regard Steven Smith, and Mitchell Starc.

Meanwhile, Maxwell and his wife Vini Raman are expecting their firstborn, having had a baby shower back in July.
