A depleted Australian side made lightwork of a dauting run-chase against South Africa to complete a 3-0 sweep in the T20I series. Travis Head brought down his career-best T20I score with a clutch 91 from just 48 balls, while Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis unleashed thunderous cameos to orchestrate their side’s dramatic win in Durban.

Ferreira 48, Abbott’s four-fer headline SA innings

Australian new-ball bowler Marcus Stoinis struck twice within his opening spell, both inside the powerplay to dismiss Temba Bavuma for a duck and Matthew Breetzke for just five.

South African opener Reeza Hendricks and captain Aiden Markram at number four stood firm around early wickets to share 58 runs together. Both cricketers scored counterattacking 40s while Tristan Stubbs at five contributed with a 16-ball 25 from his end.

Sean Abbott made instant impact with the ball, curtailing Markram’s settled stay at the crease and by removing Stubbs and Bjorn Fortuin in succession as hosts slipped to 122-6 in 13.4 overs.

Thereafter, Donovan Ferreira’s 21-ball 48 and some handy runs from Gerald Coetzee and Keshav Maharaj took South Africa to a competitive 190-8. Abbott, who snared three wickets in the middle overs, also packed Coetzee in the death to finish with 4-31 from four overs in the high-scoring innings.

Head, Inglis, Stoinis agents of a run-chase perfection

Australian opener Matthew Short found himself trapped by Proteas skipper Markram in the first ball of the innings. In-form visiting captain Mitchell Marsh also failed to threepeat his Durban form by becoming the first of two Coetzee’s victims in the run-chase.

Travis Head’s dead-eyed tonking in the powerplay and beyond helped Australia overcome their early jitters, as he shared belligerent stands with Josh Inglis and Marcus Stoinis in the middle overs. Head’s six-laden hurricane eventually concluded at 91, just nine runs short of his maiden T20I triple-figure score.

The opener’s 91, tripled with Inglis’ double-quick 42 and Stoinis’ unbeaten 37 catapulted the visitors past 190 with more than two overs to spare at Kingsmead.

The win granted the Australians a rare 3-0 T20I series sweep in South Africa, and the two white-ball titans will now shift to Bloemfontein’s Mangaung Oval for the first ODI of their upcoming five-match World Cup 2023 preparatory series.
