Gautam Gambhir, the current head coach of Indian team across formats might lose his position as head coach of the Test team if India end up performing poorly in the upcoming Border Gavaskar Trophy against Australia. According to a report from Abhishek Tripathi for Dainik Jagran, BCCI is thinking of tinkering the coaching staff for red-ball cricket and VVS Laxman who is currently with the Indian T20I team in South Africa might take over the role of head coach.

India recently suffered a whitewash from New Zealand at home and lost a series at home after 12 long years. India's tactics were heavily criticised during the Test series as the ploy of going with the rank-tuners backfired miserably. There were also reports earlier that Rohit Sharma and Gautam Gambhir were not on the same page and a 6-hour long meeting was held on Friday which included all major stakeholders of Indian cricket.

India's Mixed-Bag Performance Under Gautam Gambhir

Gautam Gambhir took over the head coach role from India's tour off Sri Lanka in July India was expected to dominate after his impressive stint with KKR. However, the story so far has been a mixed-bag with India getting whitewashed by Sri Lanka and New Zealand in ODI and Test cricket respectively despite dominant performances in T20Is.

Gambhir might still retain his head coach position in Test cricket, if India win the series, or draw or even lose by a small margin. Also, it is not clear whether Gautam Gambhir will accept the role only as a specialist white-ball coach or not and VVS Laxman's availability as a full time coach is also still in doubt. So, with plenty of questions to answer, let's see how things unfold in the upcoming months.
