In a surprising turn of events, India may opt to bring in KKR mentor Gautam Gambhir to replace Rahul Dravid as their next head coach. The 42-year-old, who played two crucial knocks in India's 2007 and 2011 World Cup finals, could get his contract right after the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024.

According to Revsportz, Gambhir 'is considered to be a front-runner in the race to succeed Rahul Dravid' for the position, as BCCI Secretary Jay Shah highlighted that they require someone who needs to have deep knowledge and understanding of the domestic circuit.

“We are focused on identifying individuals who possess a deep understanding of the Indian cricket structure and have risen through the ranks," said Shah, ruling out the possibility of proven foreign internationals such as Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, who claimed they were approached by the BCCI.

However, Shah's statement also meant VVS Laxman, whose NCA stint is going to be over by September, is in contention for the job as well.

Gambhir has been phenomenal as a mentor in the IPL, first for Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and now for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Under Gambhir's leadership, LSG reached playoffs in back-to-back seasons, while KKR finished at the top of the points table in IPL 2024 before reaching the final with a hammering victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1.

No wonder he is getting valued after stupendous success, and KKR's IPL 2024 triumph could make the case even more smooth if it happens.
