One of the most successful captains in IPL history, Gautam Gambhir, has admitted that it was Rohit Sharma who posed the greatest challenge to him during his tenure in the cash-rich league.

Gambhir, who led the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL titles, disclosed that while big-hitters like Chris Gayle and AB de Villiers were formidable opponents, it was Rohit Sharma who caused him the most concern.

In an interview with Star Sports ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2024) season, Gambhir confessed that Rohit was the only player who gave him sleepless nights. "Not Chris Gayle, not AB de Villiers, only Rohit Sharma has given me sleepless nights in the IPL," Gambhir said, highlighting the exceptional talent and consistency of Rohit.

Gambhir elaborated on the meticulous planning required to counter Rohit's batting, stressing upon the need for multiple contingency plans.

"With Rohit, I knew that I had to have Plan A, Plan B, and probably Plan C as well because if Rohit is in, I don't think anyone can control him," Gambhir further said, underscoring the strategic challenges posed by Rohit.

Rohit Sharma's remarkable record in the IPL speaks volumes about his dominance in the tournament. Leading the Mumbai Indians (MI), he has guided the franchise to an unprecedented five IPL titles, before MS Dhoni & Chennai equalled the tally last year.

Reflecting on his apprehension as an IPL captain, Gambhir reiterated his respect for Rohit's batting prowess, highlighting the need for comprehensive planning to contain him. "Rohit is the only batter I was scared of as an IPL captain," Gambhir admitted, acknowledging Sharma's ability to single-handedly influence the outcome of matches.

Certainly, Rohit stands out as one of the most intimidating cricketers in IPL history. His impressive record speaks volumes—he has participated in 243 IPL matches, amassing 6,211 runs at an average of 29.58 and a strike rate of 130.05, including one century and 42 half-centuries.
