Sri Lanka Test batter Oshada Fernando made a sensational comeback after retiring hurt, scoring a crucial century to help his team, Galle, take control in the final of the 2024/25 National Super League 4-Day tournament against Dambulla. Oshada brought up his century, reaching 120 off 188 balls, including 14 boundaries.
The game at the Sinhalese Sports Club Ground in Colombo saw Galle opt to bat first following the toss. The initial session, however, wasn't kind to the team as opener Tharanga Dilshan was sent back early for a mere 7 runs.
This left the side at 22/1, and Galle had to settle. Oshada, along with No. 3 batter Dinesh Chandimal, did just that.
Oshada Fernando’s Century Lifts Galle
They built a solid partnership, putting up over 100 runs together. However, Oshada’s innings was cut short when he retired hurt on 52 runs. This unexpected setback caused a mini-collapse as Galle quickly lost a few wickets, taking them down to 190/5.
Despite Oshada’s injury, Dinesh Chandimal took charge, playing a brilliant knock of 80 off 105 balls, including 7 fours and a six. His aggressive batting helped Galle recover from a tough position. The team ended the first day at 210/5, with Dunith Wellalage unbeaten on 27 runs.
On the second day, Galle's captain, Ramesh Mendis, added a quick 31 runs before falling. But Oshada, who had recovered well from his injury, came back to the crease and continued where he left off. With composure and confidence, Oshada Fernando slammed a century, reaching 120 runs off 188 balls, including 14 boundaries. Owing to his ton, his team put 370 runs on the board in the first inning.
Galle's strong batting performance was followed by their bowlers making quick work of the opposition. They reduced Dambulla to 138/5, with Nimsara Atharagalla taking 4 important wickets. Only Ron Chandraguptha offered some resistance with a solid 65, but Dambulla ended the day at a challenging 154/5, with a 216-run trail hanging over their heads.
