Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced the uncontested re-election of Shammi Silva as its president for the 2025–2027 term, marking his fourth consecutive term and third unchallenged election.
The decision was formalized during the 64th Annual General Meeting (AGM) at Colombo’s Cinnamon Grand Hotel, supervised by a five-member Election Committee chaired by retired Court of Appeal Justice Malanie Gunaratne.
Election Details and Office Bearers Of Sri Lanka Cricket
The AGM, conducted under SLC’s amended constitution, saw Silva’s camp retain dominance. Key office-bearers elected uncontested include:
- Honorary President: Shammi Silva
- Honorary Vice Presidents: Dr. Jayantha Dharmadasa, Ravin Wickramaratne
- Honorary Secretary: Bandula Dissanayake
- Honorary Treasurer: Sujeewa Godaliyadda
- Honorary Assistant Secretary: Chryshantha Kapuwatte
- Honorary Assistant Treasurer: Lasantha Wickremasinghe
This continuity reflects Silva’s consolidated influence, with loyalists retaining critical roles. The election committee confirmed no opposition nominations were submitted, attributing Silva’s uncontested win to "unified stakeholder support."
Silva’s Tenure In Sri Lanka Cricket Board
Silva, 64, first assumed office in 2019 and has since navigated significant challenges. His tenure saw Sri Lanka host the 2023 Asia Cup and secure a T20 World Cup berth. However, controversies persist.
Notably, Silva’s recent appointment as Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President in December 2024, succeeding India’s Jay Shah—has bolstered his regional stature.
Silva, a former Colombo Cricket Club captain and squash national coach, emphasized "structural reforms and youth development" in his acceptance speech. Critics, however, argue his administration prioritizes commercial ventures over grassroots cricket.
Looking Ahead For SLC
With Silva’s re-election, SLC signals continuity over change. While supporters laud his crisis management during the ICC suspension, opponents demand transparency.
As Sri Lanka prepares to co-host the 2026 T20 World Cup, Silva’s ability to balance commercial interests with sporting excellence will define his legacy. For now, his grip on Sri Lankan cricket remains unchallenged.
