Former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) all-rounder Irfan Pathan praised Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) pacer Mitchell Starc for his fiery spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Qualifier 1 of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad, on Tuesday.

Pathan, like many others, was impressed with the KKR quick's sensational performance with the ball, especially in such an important match. The most expensive player in IPL history, Mitchell Starc justified the investment KKR made in him with a stellar display when the team needed it most.

Before this game, the experienced Australian pacer was under a bit of pressure because he had a mediocre season. There was growing criticism around him, but he silenced his critics with a spectacular performance in the powerplay, delivering a match-winning spell.

He started by dismissing Travis Head, SRH's in-form batter with over 500 runs this season. Starc then set himself up for a hat-trick by taking the wickets of Nitish Reddy and Shahbaz Ahmed on consecutive deliveries. Starc finished with figures of 3/34.

How did the match unfold?

After electing to bat, SRH's top-order was dismantled by Starc, leaving them at 39/4. Despite efforts from Rahul Tripathi and Heinrich Klaasen, who took SRH past 100, Varun Chakravarthy and Harshit Rana tightened the screws in the middle overs. A late cameo from skipper Pat Cummins helped SRH reach a respectable total of 159.

In response, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Sunil Narine gave KKR a flying start, reaching 44/0 after three overs.

Although both departed eventually at 67/2, Venkatesh Iyer (51*) and Shreyas Iyer (58*) made the run chase straightforward, with Shreyas playing the aggressor role. The Iyer duo ensured a resounding win for KKR with their superb batting performance.
