Former captain of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), Gautam Gambhir has made a significant return to the franchise. This time, he has joined the franchise as a mentor for the upcoming 2024 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The duration of his tenure in this role has not been specified yet.

Gambhir, renowned for his leadership in T20 and ODI formats, particularly as a member of the World Cup-winning teams in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI), initially joined KKR in 2011 and played a pivotal role until 2017.

His captaincy was instrumental in leading KKR to two IPL championships in 2012 and 2014. Under his leadership, the team consistently performed well, qualifying for the IPL playoffs five times and reaching the final of the Champions League T20 in 2014, which has since been discontinued.

Gambhir will join the Knight Riders' support staff which features prominent names and is headed by Chandrakant Pandit as the head coach. The team includes Abhishek Nayar and James Foster as assistant coaches, Bharat Arun as the bowling coach, and Ryan ten Doeschate as the fielding coach.

KKR, one of the IPL's original franchises since its inception in 2008, reached the IPL final in 2021 but faced defeat against Chennai Super Kings. However, their performance dipped in the subsequent seasons, finishing seventh in both 2022 and 2023.
