Bangladesh cricketer Mohammad Mithun has stepped into a new role off the field, clinching a massive win in the elections to become the new president of the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB).
The middle-order batter secured a landslide victory against former national cricketer and current match referee Selim Shahed, winning by 154 votes to 34 in Thursday’s ballot held at the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Academy in Dhaka.
Mohammad Mithun To Work Towards Bangladesh’s Cricket Welfare
The elections come after CWAB’s previous leadership, headed by former captain Naimur Rahman, collapsed following the fall of the former government.
Naimur, who had been leading CWAB since 2014, is currently in jail and has disappeared from the public eye, leaving the top post vacant.
In March, a 13-member committee led by Shahed was formed to oversee fresh elections, paving the way for Mithun’s candidacy. The 34-year-old, now entrusted with protecting the interests of Bangladesh’s cricketers, promised to maintain a strong relationship with the BCB.
Notably, only the presidential post was contested. Several other key roles were filled unopposed. Former opener Shahriar Hossain Bidyut became senior vice-president, while Bangladesh’s current wicketkeeper Nurul Hasan Sohan was elected as vice-president.
Big names in Bangladesh cricket also joined the executive committee without opposition, including Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Akbar Ali, Rumana Ahmed, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, Irfan Sukkur, former captain Khaled Mashud Pilot, and Imrul Kayes.
With so many prominent stars now part of the CWAB leadership, expectations are high that the new committee will bring fresh energy and stronger advocacy for players at all levels.
