In a significant development, New Zealand legend Ross Taylor, who bid adieu to the game in 2022, has reversed his decision and come out of retirement at the age of 41. Taylor took to social media to inform fans about his plan. Notably, Taylor would not be featuring for New Zealand, but will be seen playing for Samoa - an emerging cricketing nation from oceania region.
"It's official - I'm proud to announce that I'll be pulling on the blue and representing Samoa in cricket. This is more than just a return to the game I love - it's the huge honour to represent my heritage, culture, villages, and family. I'm excited for the opportunity to give back to the game, join the squad, and share my experience on and off the field," Taylor wrote on his Instagram handle.
Samoa are currently placed in 2026 Men's T20 World Cup Asia–EAP Regional Final, where they start their tournament from October 8 and a few positive results in their favour will see them qualifying for the prestigious T20 tournament in India and Sri Lanka next year.
How Did Taylor Become Eligible To Play For Samoa?
Further, talking about Ross Taylor, he represented New Zealand from 2006-22 and ended his career as their second-leading run-getter across formats. Further, Taylor holds a Samoan passport as well, courtesy of his mother's heritage, which is why he is eligible to represent Samoa in the upcoming qualifiers.
Also, Taylor has completed the mandatory three-year cooling off period before switching teams as he last played for New Zealand in April 2022. The 41-year-old will next be seen in action on October 8 when Samoa takes on Oman.
