BCB elections set for early October [Source: AFP]
The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that its next election will be held in the first week of October, though the exact date will be confirmed by the Election Commission. October 4 is being discussed as a possible day. The decision was made following a board meeting in Sylhet.
BCB vice-president Nazmul Abedin explained that a three-member Election Commission will soon be formed, with the president recommending names that will then be approved by the board.
"The BCB election will be held in the first week of October. The election commission will confirm the exact date," Nazmul Abedin told reporters, as quoted by Cricbuzz.
"The Election Commission has not yet been formed by name. The responsibility of recommending names has been left to the President. A three-member Election Commission will be formed, and I believe we will know about it within a couple of days. We will follow the directions from the constitution," he said.
This move, however, has sparked some debate. Current BCB president Aminul Islam is expected to run again in the upcoming election, and some feel that allowing him to suggest members of the Election Commission could be a conflict of interest. Critics argue that this gives him influence over the body that will oversee the election.
However, Nazmul Abedin downplayed the issue, saying that Aminul would consult other board members before finalising the names and that all procedures would follow the board’s constitution.
"No, it is not a conflict. Although the president has been given the responsibility, he will do it in consultation with the board members. There are guidelines on how it should be done, including what backgrounds the members should come from," said Nazmul.
IMG and Simon Taufel join BCB projects
The meeting also covered several other developments. New York-based company IMG has been appointed as Bangladesh Premier League’s marketing consultant for the next three years. In an effort to raise umpiring standards, former ICC elite umpire Simon Taufel will work with the BCB for two years.
"We will see Simon Taufel in an important role in Bangladesh's umpiring department. He is coming for two years. He will assess, evaluate and grade the umpires. We will learn from him so that we can work with our resources once he leaves," said Nazmul.
Meanwhile, a four-member committee has been set up to investigate allegations of corruption and poor management during last season’s BPL. This committee will review the preliminary report and submit its recommendations by September 7.
